Long before these titles became popular, there were a breed of bankers that were true to the spirit of banking – The Merchant Banker. Today we call ourselves private equity deal makers. But you can think of me as an alchemist, a person who likes to mix and match the financial needs of the cautious investor with those of the free-spirited entrepreneur, helping both grow faster and further.
Being Indian…
You had two career choices – engineering or medicine. I took neither. After seeing my dad work day and night to help patients, I realized that I couldn’t be as great or committed to the medical profession as he was. This lead to the biggest discovery of my own – business.
1 Decade. 2 Careers.
As a result, the first half of the decade was being a management consultant, trying to solve problems for others – definitely a good business to be in. What I learned… Knowledge is queen! structure, measure and manage. That’s all you need to know. I gained from the best practices of Andersen, Ernst & Young and BDO, the exposure to international clientele, international knowledge, international team mates is really worth every minute. And as a management consultant, helped large and small organizations; strategize and improve their operations from Finance, IT and HR to complete business process re-engineering and later to fund raising and corporate advisory. This is rare operational expertise, across a broad industry base.
Then came the next phase, using my knowledge of advising businesses and my operational expertise, I decided to join a private equity house where I could help people who wanted to invest in good businesses and grow them. The second half of the decade was being a deal maker, dealing with the biggest problem for all businesses – cash – the life blood of an organization. You see, being entrepreneurial, and having failed at some small ventures, I began to see the need for money to run a business, and that being a banker could help… what I learned… Cash is king. And that is where I am today – private equity and venture capital. But that cash is not enough. There’s more…

The story doesn’t end here, being a top deal maker requires you to combine a unique set of skills. You have to be part-master relationship builder (to source and originate deals), part-legal eagle (to close and execute agreements), part-financial wizard (to build financial and operating models) and part-management consultant (to add value to the portfolio company). As a result, my mission statement for now is:
Building bridges between financiers (people who have money) and founders (businesses that need money), and growing them by adding value (with internal and external specialists).
